Encyclopaedia Project (2022-Present)
Using old Arthur Mee Children’s Encyclopaedia’s (1908) as sketchbooks this project began with a fascination for the wonder held within their pages. Images and fragments became portals to an imaginal world; one where the edges between human, animal and cosmos begin to dissolve to create an enchanted universe that recognises the intrinsic value of all beings — seen and unseen.

Pools & Palms (2018-2020)
This body of work emerged from a decade of living in San Francisco CA, a landscape and culture profoundly different from my homeland in the UK.
Palm trees, desert forms and cacti become recurring motifs to explore a sense of displacement, fascination and freedom. The intense Californian light, heat and expansive landscape transform the familiar into something dreamlike; at once real and imagined. Somewhere between observation and fantasy, drawing on its otherworldly beauty; a place loved and reimagined.

Girls
In these works I paint directly onto my own archival photographic prints overlaying them with a recurring figure; a girl seen from behind almost an apparition. Her presence shifts between images and landscapes, becoming part of the environment and somehow separate from it. We never see her face, instead, we become witnesses to her quiet relationship with the world around her. Through repetition she becomes the vessel for intimacy — at times absorbed into the landscape, at others caught in a state of contemplation or entanglement. Painting onto the photograph introduces something imagined, and allows the works to exist somewhere between the real and the other.
